SPAH Convention Week Celebrates Harmonica
Present/Former Local Harp Players Mix It Up @ Various Venues

RJ Mischo
The Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica will be holding their 47th Annual Convention at the Ramada Mall of America in Bloomington, MN August 17 -21. One of the fringe benefits for blues fans is that the convention has attracted some great harp players to the area. Not to say that we don’t already have great harp players here, but… On Tuesday, August 17, there will be a Harmonica Blow-Off at Famous Dave’s BBQ in Calhoun Square beginning at 8 pm. Mike Fugazzi & NiteRail will be the host band. Rob Paparozzi, Steve Baker, Brendan Power, Joe Filisko & Eric Noden, Chris Michalek, Jimi Lee, and RJ Mischo are listed among the guests. $15 Cover.

Kim Wilson
On Wednesday, August 18, RJ Mischo will appear on KFAI’s House Party between 4 and 6 pm and also at the 331 Club House Party Presents Series at 7 pm. RJ also will be at Wilebski’s Blues Saloon, (hopefully in the new location on Rice St), on August 21 and at Muddy Waters Bar & Grill on August 22. On Friday, August 20, Kim Wilson & The Blues Allstars will be appearing at Wilebski’s Blues Saloon and on Sunday, August 22nd, Kim will be appearing with The Fabulous Thunderbirds at the Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant. There will be plenty of opportunities to celebrate the harmonica, ‘Mississippi saxophone’, ‘metal sandwich’, ‘blues harp’, ‘mouth organ’ or whatever you choose to call it. — Jake Jacobson

Juliano, Sansby, Jackson
@ Hollihan's
Pick, Scratch and Keys, Saturday, August 14, 4-7 pm
Veteran musicians, Joe Juliano and Scott Sansby, team up in what appears to be a weekly gig from 4-7 pm on Saturdays at Hollihan's Pub in White Bear Lake. Joe Juliano has been playing guitar around this area since the '70's. His band, A Hot Cup of Blues, was voted City Pages "Best Blues Band" in 1997. I remember seeing Joe in the early days at a little club not far from Hollihan's playing with the Pritchard, Denim & Juliano Trio. Scott Sansby's recent resume includes playing percussion for Mick Sterling, Moses Oakland Quintet and Scottie Miller & the Re-Uptake Inhibitors along with occasional gigs with Willie Murphy and the Angel Headed Hipsters, Papa John Kolstad & Clint Hoover and the Lisa Wenger Band. My best memories of Scott are from the mid-1970's when he played with Passage, a band that included Doug Maynard, Gwen Matthews, Bobby Schnitzer, and Bruce Kurnow. This week Joe and Scott are joined by Bruce Jackson on the accordion. — Jake Jacobson

Kent DuChaine @ Ginkgo Coffeehouse

Kent DuChaine
Thursday, August 12 • 7 pm
Kent DuChaine will be performing at the Ginkgo Coffeehouse on Thursday August 12. The concert starts at 7:30 pm. $10 per ticket. Kent is home-grown and left Minnesota in the 70s to take his music on the road. He was a friend of Joel’s and he knew Lazy Bill Lucas. Kent has played at the Ginkgo before when he’s been home to visit family. The concert, at $10, is a great value. At 13, after getting his first electric guitar, he and a few of his buddies formed a garage band in his hometown of Wayzata, Minnesota. DuChaine learned to play slide guitar in 1969. One year later he opened for slide guitar genius Bukka White. From 1972 - 1975 DuChaine joined a band with Kim Wilson, of the present day Fabulous Thunderbirds. — from Judy Cedar
